Whatever are we doing?
As humans, we have a long history of separation. It’s time to make peace with the price we pay for the killing fields. My memoir has already been written. Myopia, a memoir was published in 2017 by IP Books (International Psychoanalytic Books). When folks ask me if I will write another one, I look at them aghast. If it took me thirty years to write this one, what sacrifices would another one require? I cannot imagine. In any event, my thoughts on that particular topic have been exhausted. But as I reflect on the changes occurring in this country today, and then ponder the history of the world, I find myself devoting more blogs to the questions that arise for me. I am first generation here. My father fled from some of the worst pogroms in Russia. The family who...
Pleasant Encounters: A Great Book Club Session on What Survives
Due to the persistence of a neighbor I had never really met, Ruth Ives (front left in purple), I was invited to a “meet the author” at the Placitas Library book club’s meetings. It was Ruth’s turn to select a book, and I had just met Geri Verble at the Hoot Gallery (see her fabulous jewelry there) where she purchased my novel, What Survives. Geri told Ruth that if she chose my book, I lived right in the neighborhood and probably would agree to come to answer questions. What a smart and lovely group of women! I enjoyed this event immensely. And I did get to meet and speak with Ruth at my Bookworks’ reading for my newest book, Myopia, a memoir, in October. Book Clubs, like most other clubs, can be as stimulating as they can be dull. This one is stellar....
What Does Survive? The Roar of the Lion
An evening with a journalist-in-exile at the Raindrop Turkish House On March 4, 2016, Abdülhamit Bilici lost his position of 25 years as Editor in Chief of Zaman, the largest newspaper in Turkey. Ten days later, with an overnight bag in hand and a passport that might just as easily have been already revoked, he boarded a plane out of Istanbul, knowing full well he might not ever be able to return. On March 3, 2017, I had the flu and a fever of 101. I also had tickets to a lecture at the Raindrop Turkish House in Albuquerque. The presenter I wanted to hear was a journalist in exile from Turkey. His name was Abdülhamit Bilici. And so at 4 p.m., against all odds and with complete disregard for the health and safety of others, I hoisted myself out of bed and...
What Does Survive? A Reading in New York
From the author of What Survives A Reading and Book Signing at the American Sephardi Federation in New York City Jan. 18, 2017 Arthur and I arrive in New York City in the early morning hours at JFK via the Jet Blue red-eye. I am here to do a reading and book signing for my novel What Survives. We settle into our taxi, just half-awake, accustomed to the heavy morning rush hour traffic and ready for the long drive into midtown Manhattan. We cross the bridge we’ve crossed a gazillion times before and like little children returning to the Emerald City in the wonderful Land of Oz, we call out to each other as if we are seeing these old friends for the first time. “Oh look, there she is, the Lady of Liberty, waking up with us!” “And there’s the Chrysler...
Iftar Meal For The Turkish Language Class
Muhsine Aykac and her husband, Salih, hosted an incredible iftar dinner (the meal eaten after sundown during Ramadan) for our Turkish class. Salih’s parents were visiting from Turkey and his anne definitely makes the tastiest grape leaves I’ve ever eaten. Let’s hope that things will calm down over there so we can all go back next year and try all the grape leaves we can find just to be sure.
